Community Science, Volunteer Opportunities, and Grants

Tucson Bird Alliance is looking for the following volunteer help:

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities If interested in either of these, please contact our Applied Conservation Program Manager, Olya Weekley, at oweekley@tucsonbirds.org.
Nestbox Painters
We’re looking for 1-2 volunteers to paint owl boxes and wooden tripod supports at the Mason Center in July and August (exact dates flexible).  If desired, boxes can be taken offsite for painting. Must be able to bend down and paint on the ground or on a table in hot weather conditions (Tucson mornings).
Nestbox Woodworkers
We’re looking for up to 5 volunteers to cut and assemble large nestboxes in July and August (exact dates flexible). Volunteers must be self-sufficient with ample experience in the use of power tools and saws, and must have own tools and woodworking space. All purchases of materials will be reimbursed.

Sustainable Tucson needs volunteers for Upcoming 2026 Pueblos del Maiz Festival Sept. 26

The Tucson City of Gastronomy has asked Sustainable Tucson to help make this year’s Pueblos del Maíz Festival a more sustainable event by providing volunteers for its waste sorting stations.  This free community event features regional food vendors, artisan booths, interactive art installations, and live music.

Event: Fiesta del Maiz, Kennedy Park, Fiesta Area
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2026
Time: 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Volunteers will be stationed at waste collection areas to help festival attendees properly separate food waste and other compostable materials from regular trash. Each station will have two collection carts:

  • Food waste and compostables
  • Regular trash

The collected materials will be picked up by Tucson Environmental Services for proper management.

No special experience is necessary. Volunteers will receive simple instructions before the event. This is a great opportunity to support one of Tucson’s signature cultural celebrations while helping reduce waste and promote composting.

Two volunteer shifts: 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.

If you’re interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact Paula Schlusberg at paula@sustainabletucson.org.  Your help will make a real difference in keeping this community event as sustainable as possible.

Native Seeds/SEARCH needs garden volunteers

Volunteer shifts are 7:00-10:00 AM, Tuesdays & Thursdays. All shifts take place at the CC Farm at River/Alvernon (3584 E River Rd) When you arrive at the Conservation Center, we’ll likely be out in the field. Both pathways from the parking lot lead into the courtyard – follow the west path to two picnic tables- our volunteer “home base.” You can sign in there and flag any of our staff/apprentices down. They will plug you into the day’s work!
